Abstract

Nearly one in three (30%) teenage American girls (aged 14 to 18) seriously considered attempting suicide in 2021, up from a fifth (19%) in 2011, according to a report from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).1 The highest rate of suicidal ideation was seen among LGBQ+ students with 45% affected in 2021.

The report, which covers the decade from 2011 to 2021, found that while some improvements have been seen in relation to substance abuse and bullying, across almost all other areas “behaviours worsened significantly.”
