Abstract

We read with great interest the recent article published by Airaksinen et al. that analyzed the characteristics of 326 severely injured cyclists in Finland from 2006 to 2021 to describe patient demographics, injuries, injury severity, alcohol use of the injured cyclists, helmet use, and need for intensive care of severe cycling trauma. The study was conducted retrospectively utilizing data from the Helsinki Trauma Registry (HTR), which comprises patient demographic information, injury details, pre-hospital and in-hospital physiological variables, treatment methods, and outcomes. Firstly, we argue that every country should have national registers that meticulously collect trauma data to enable essential considerations to improve public health safety. Indeed, in order to refine prevention policies effectively, it is crucial to meticulously gather data on the type and severity of injuries.
