Abstract

Monitor sites were established for the periodic measurement of Benkelman beam deflections. Pavements consisted essentially of asphaltic concrete over a crushed rock base. The roads were all classified roads and varied from heavily-trafficked arterial roads to lightly-trafficked roads. The average annual rainfall ranged from 800 to 1200 mm depending on the site. At all but one site the deflections were measured only in the outer wheelpath. Maximum deflections only were recorded. At three of the eight sites there were significant variations in deflections with time but there was no correlation with rainfall or evaporation evident from the data presented. The implications of the results for design of asphaltic concrete overlays are discussed.
