Abstract

This technical note reports on driver day-time behaviour at a field signposting trial at two uncontrolled railway level crossings, with the aim of developing more effective signposting. In 1983, a review of the design and installation of new signs was made as a means of enhancing the safety of level crossings, particularly those normally used by high-speed trains. The analysis of the available field data (Ong 1985), considered driver head movements and vehicle approach speeds. The results showed no clear-cut advantages of the experimental signs over standard signs. Of the two experimental sign arrangements, the one with the yellow crossbuck sign was considered slightly superior to the one with the red.
