Abstract

Sight distance is a basic element of geometric road design and the standards set for minimum acceptable values of sight distance have a direct bearing on the cost of a road. This paper sets out the results of a study into the sight distance rrequirements of rural roads. The traditional concepts of stopping and overtaking sight distance are examined and it is concluded that a different approach may be warranted. Different bases for the assessment of the minimum sight distance requirements and for overtaking requirements are suggested and values for design are given. While the various aspects of rural sight distance requirements are discussed, particular attention is given to the design of crest vertical curves.
