Abstract

This paper demonstrates the application of traffic conflict techniques (TCTs) at urban intersections. Results obtained through such an application at six major roundabouts (also known as traffic circles or rotaries) in Kuwait are presented. The patterns of three commonly occuring conflict types, i.e. lane changing, sudden stop, and violation for giveway were investigated at these locations. The inter-relationships that exist between the types of conflicts and various examples of roundabout geometry and traffic flow parameters were investigated using stepwise multiple regression analysis. Models were developed to enable the prediction of conflicts for use in the design and apprasial of roundabouts.
