Abstract

A review of past studies showed that lack of conspicuity is a cause of many road accidents and casualties. An analysis of motorcycle casualty accidents and car casualty accidents that occurred in Western Australia during 1988 was carried out. Motorcyclists had more multi-vehicle accidents during the day than single-vehicle accidents. Differences between motorcycles and cars in the patterns of multi-vehicle and single-vehicle accidents occurring during light and dark conditions were examined. This comparison showed that differences between motorcycle and car accidents were not significant. It may be that the pattern of day and night-time accidents for motorcyclists is not different from that for car drivers because motorcyclists do not have a conspicuity problem that differs in a major way from that of car drivers.
