Abstract

In response to increasing concern about truck safety, the Australian Road Transport Federation commissioned a review of truck safety issues in Australia, with a view to identifying both immediate and longer-term actions to improve safety that could be justified on the basis of existing information regarding their cost and effectiveness, and also to identifying the critical research issues. Consultants were appointed to assemble comprehensive statistics on truck safety in Australia, estimate the cost of truck accidents, and to review the role of road and traffic factor, vehicle design and maintenance factors, and driver and organisational factors. The main outcomes of these individual tasks are briefly described. With the help of a steering committee with wide representation from the industry and regulating authorities, a comprehensive Action and Research Plan for the industry was developed. The Action and Research Plan is presented in detail, and prospects for its implementation are discussed.
