Abstract

The paper is a personal view of some safety related matters over the period since the Transport Program started at Monash. It does not purport to represent the views of the Australian Road Research Board. Some of the major programs in the seventies are highlighted such as the seat belt wearing law and the introduction of priority roads and some of the difficulties faced now because of the lack of integrated data sources, the lack of continuity in accident reporting and recording systems so that instead of having information on which to base recommendations for countermeasures or determine their effects, opinions rule the day. There are still many areas of vehicle and road engineering to be addressed and these have to be preceded by stabilising, improving and expanding the relevant information bases.
