Abstract

This study examines the factors affecting accidents involving taxis in Singapore. Demographic variables and attitude factors are considered in this study. From a survey questionnaire distributed to taxi drivers, 314 completed questionnaires were analysed and the findings reveal the following: (a) 41.6% of reported accidents took place between 1200 hours and 1600 hours with 69.2% of these accidents occurring between 1400 hours and 1500 hours; (b) 54.2% of the taxi drivers cited 'other drivers' fault' as the reason for accident(s); weather conditions were given as the second most common reason (15.2 %) as adverse weather conditions such as heavy rain tend to affect both the vision of the driver, and the road condition; and (c) experience, family size, and 'unreasonable driver' are significant factors in taxi drivers' accidents.
