Abstract

The challenge for the transportation industry is to broaden its perspective and be more proactive in meeting the diverse needs of the public it serves, including access for people with disabilities. To help transportaiton engineers meet this challenge, the US Access Board is developing guidelines for accessible street crossings and sidewalks. The guidelines are based on PROWAAC's recommendation for the construction or alteration of public rights-of-way that reflect the broad spectrum of expertise represented by committee members. When completed, the guidelines are expected to fill a long-standing need for clear-cut guidance in this area to help states and local jurisdictions satisfy their obligations under various federal laws, including the landmark Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).
