Abstract

Safe Routes to School (SR2S) is a growing movement that integrates health, fitness, traffic relief, environmental awareness and safety goals into one program, with transportation professionals playing a key role. Under this movement, many low-cost engineering measures can be implemented to achieve success. Some of the more common are as follows: repair sidewalks and pathways and remove obstacles; provide high-visibility crosswalks; improve school area signing; consider use of new signing techniques; expand the size of the school zone; install pavement legends; modify traffic signal phasing or timing to improve pedestrian crossings; develop school walking and bicycle route maps; modify drop-off/pick-up operations; and hold regular traffic safety days. In some cases, higher-cost engineering measures are also needed such as separating pedestrian and bicycle facilities, and providing bicycle lanes, crossing enhancements, traffic calming.
