Abstract

To reduce the probability of damage to occupants in the collision between vehicles, and to provide a basis for reducing the severity of accidents, ΔV (the speed difference between before and after the vehicle collision) is used as the independent variable. According to the damage formula of the head and chest, the damage to the occupant under the four constraints of the combination of the seat belt and the airbag is analyzed. The damage data are associated with the accident damage determination standard AIS to predict the probability of the occupant damage level being AIS3+. And a specific example is given for explanation. The results show that there is a positive correlation between the probability of occupant damage level AIS3+ and the speed difference ΔV, under the four constraints, when ΔV is lower than 20 km/ h, the probability of AIS3+ is lower than 10%, when ΔV is between 20-60 km/ h, the safety belt and airbag restraint have the best protection effect on the occupant because the probability of AIS3+ is the lowest, and when ΔV exceeds 60 km/ h, the restraint system has limited protection for occupants, that under the four constraints, the probability of AIS3+ is over 85%, and that before the collision, the driver should reduce the occupant damage probability by reducing the ΔV and ensuring that the occupant is constrained by both the seat belt and the airbag. © 2019 China Safety Science Journal.
