Abstract

Lightning strike injury (LSI) is a potentially fatal event, causing approximately 28 deaths annually--the second leading cause of weather-related deaths--in the United States. From 2006 to 2021, there were 444 lightning strike deaths in the United States. Globally, lightning-related deaths account for an estimated 0.2 to 1.7 deaths per million subjects each year. Two-thirds of lightning-associated deaths occur in the first hour of injury and are generally due to arrhythmias or respiratory failure. 4
Not much is known about the cardiac manifestations diagnosed in those patients who survived in the field and were hospitalized. This study analyzed LSI hospitalizations from 2015 to 2020 using the National Inpatient Sample (NIS) database and focused on cardiac manifestations.
