Abstract

This study assessed the psychosocial contributions in some selected primary schools of Gombe Metropolis, Gombe State. The study adopted descriptive research design. The research had five objectives and answered five corresponding questions. The population for the study was 29 teachers selected systematically from four (4) primary schools in the metropolis. An instrument tagged: KeyInformants Interview (KII) was used to collect data for the study. Data collected was analyzed using the frequency and simple percentage.

FINDINGS from the study showed that the psychosocial training given to teachers of pupils is effective when put to use. Such intervention is capable of restoring better behaviour among children who have suffered from the Boko Haram insurgency. Moreover, the wellbeing of the children was observed to have improved as a result of the psychosocial support they received from the teachers who participated in the training programme. The study recommends among others that teachers in Gombe state should be trained on psychosocial approaches and children coming from the insurgent areas should be identified and given the necessary support towards rehabilitating their mental state. Finally, the Gombe state government should organise and train teacher of school aged children in psychosocial intervention urgently in order to cater for many children in schools.
