Abstract

The psychology of religion is a growing field in Western countries, reflecting scholars' increasing interest in religion and spirituality. In contrast, in Japan, few psychological studies have addressed these topics. This paper reviews the literature on the psychology of religion/spirituality to clarify its current state, research topics and challenges the field faces. First, while the Division 36 of the American Psychological Association (Society for the Psychology of Religion and Spirituality) plays a vital role in promoting research in the field, other disciplines also engage in psychological research of religions. They include non-empirical psychological studies of religion and spirituality, Zen psychology, and the cognitive science of religion. Second, the topics being covered in the field are quite diverse. For instance, the study themes in social psychology include relationships between religion and such variables as personality, prosocial tendency, violence, prejudice, health, death, and morality among others. In the cognitive science of religion, researchers explore how ordinary cognitive mechanisms, such as the theory of mind, anthropomorphism, and folk dualism, are responsible for the perceptions of religious phenomena. Third, there are three challenges that the field of psychology of religion and spirituality in Japan currently faces: how to define religion and spirituality, how to evaluate the relationship between researchers and their personal religious beliefs, and how to study "non-religious" people who heretofore have been mostly excluded from studies. Solving these challenges would greatly increase the possibilities of this field in Japan.

宗教心理学の分野は，宗教およびスピリチュアリティに対する関心の高まりを反映し て，近年欧米で発展している。他方で日本においては，宗教という主題を心理学的に扱 った研究はほとんど存在しなかった。本研究では，宗教心理学の文献をレビューし，そ の研究領域，研究テーマおよび課題を明らかにすることを目的にする。宗教心理学は米 国心理学会第 36 部門における研究を中心とするが，それ以外に非実証的な宗教心理学， 禅心理学，宗教認知科学も宗教の心理学的研究とみなせる。宗教心理学の研究テーマに 関しては，社会心理学的研究においては宗教とパーソナリティや向社会性，暴力と偏見 などの他の変数の相関が扱われており，それに加え宗教と健康，宗教と死，宗教と道徳 の関係も探究されている。宗教認知科学は，心の理論，擬人観，素朴二元論といった人 の日常的な認知メカニズムが宗教現象を生み出すとみなしている。宗教心理学の課題 としては，宗教とスピリチュアリティの概念をいかに定義するか，研究者と宗教との関 係性をどのように評価するか，これまで研究対象に含まれていなかった無宗教者をど のように扱うかという 3 つが挙げられる。これらを考慮することで，日本における宗教 心理学の意義もまた大きくなるものと思われる。
