Abstract

Pedestrian errors are found in 59% of the vehicle to-pedestrian accidents. The traffic crash statistics show the importance of understanding factors of pedestrians' error. Pedestrians' red-light violation is a type of highly dangerous behavior occurring at intersections. A total of 1130 pedestrians approaching the intersections during red light periods were obtained from careful review of the videotapes in 6 intersections at Tehran, Iran. A logit model is developed to identify the probability and effect of various covariates for pedestrians' immediate crossing behavior. The estimated parameters of the logit model in predicting the immediate crossing behavior were determined, and the significant parameters were identified. The results indicate that the immediate crossing was significantly affected by Survey location (South, center or north of the city), Gender, Crosswalk length, temperature range, traffic volume and the number of other pedestrians who are waiting for the green light and who are crossing against red light when the pedestrian arrives at the intersection, but Influence of Survey time (Peak or Off-peak) and age are not significant.
