Abstract

Stress is laid on the need to thoroughly examine all young people wishing to go in for sport, and an attempt made to identify individual aptitudes in the choice of sport. It is pointed out that in puberty, sport should not be practised for competitive purposes but for play only. Some sports are then listed and the most suitable for each biotype pinpointed. The second part of this paper aims to recommend certain sports for young people presenting malformations and diseases of the locomotor system, in the conviction that such activity is of psychological and therapeutic benefit. In conclusion, the necessity to be fully aware of the consequences a sport can have on an unsuitable subject is pointed out. It is therefore essential to assess aspirant sportsmen by means of selection processes. The objectives which the orthopaedist should set himself are to study the pathological conditions and consequences to which any sport can lead, monitor the active sportsmen so as to identify disease conditions right from their onset, and then operate the most suitable therapy for guaranteeing best morphological recovery.
