Abstract

NHTSA's New Car Assessment Program (NCAP) has been a highly visible activity from the time it was first publicized. Judging by the large demand for the first issue of the 'Car Book' released by Administrator Claybrook a few years ago, and judging by the apparent further success of those now commercially exploiting this book, one concludes that a large number of people are interested in safety comparisons of cars. The actual 'on the road' fatal accident experience of the rated cars does not show a significant relationship to the safety ratings published. This failure to find a relationship agrees with what HSRC released last Fall when accidents involving about 30,000 rated cars were analyzed.
