Abstract

Many medical aspects of fitness to drive are not static, but change for various reasons. Advances in treatment, investigations and surveillance of illness are examples mentioned in previous research. Aging of the population will lead to changes in medical aspects which have to be considered, changes in traffic environment and changes in car engineering are other reasons; but some aspects are rather constant over time, e.g. the evaluation of the acute effect of alcohol on driving. Possible changes in the medical requirements for the Federal Republic of Germany and the changes proposed by the Commission of the European Communities are discussed.
