Abstract

In this discussion of road traffic accidents as a public health problem, the following topics are addressed: the introduction of the concept traffic medicine; the man, the vehicle, and the environment--three components in one system; the responsibility of the public health departments; epidemiological analysis; the protection of car occupants; the unprotected road users; why regulations demand the use of injury reducing equipment; the medical requirements for drivers; first aid at the scene of an accident; and the design of a road traffic safety program.
