Abstract

Alcohol consumption is an underlying but often overlooked risk factor for many injuries, including vehicular accidents, falls, drownings, homicides, suicides, and burns. This review of an article from the Annals of Emergency Medicine, November, 1984, points out that, according to Albert B. Lowenfels, M.D., author of the study, young drivers constitute a high-risk group especially prone to fatal automobile accidents and the use of alcohol plays a prominent role in these deaths. The study also shows that in automobile pedestrian accidents the pedestrian has often been drinking prior to the accident.
