Abstract

The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of striking vehicle body types on the struck vehicle's occupant injuries in side impact crashies. The accident investigation findings indicated that the ratio of fatal and serious injuries to all injuries of occupants in struck passenger vehicles was highest when the struck vehicle was impacted laterally by an SUV or one box type vehicle. The results from side impact crash testing, where an ECE/R95 MDB, a passenger vehicle, and a one box type vehicle impacted the side of the same model passenger vehicle, indicated that the injuty measures for HPC was lowest and thoracic rib deflection and V*C were highest when the one box type vehicle was the impacting vehicle.
