Abstract

In the process of A Survey Simulator to Evaluate Safety Systems (ASSESS), it is important to determine how to set the braking methods chosen by drivers. In this study we investigated how drivers apply the brakes when following a lead vehicle, and examined their braking strategy. By conducting statistical analysis we determined the important factors that relate to the braking timing and the brake pedal force. It is thought that the braking timing is affected by inverse of Time-to-Collision, and brake pedal force is influenced by VV/L that is the square of relative speed divided by the following distance.
