Abstract

Major factor in traffic accidents is a human error that is caused by the mental distraction. Recently, various kinds of driving support systems that prevent the human error are being developed. In this study, the effectiveness of the system to notify the driver about approaching to the intersections was evaluated in a driving simulator. For instance, the effectiveness to reduce the accidents by use of the driving support system was evaluated based on the state transition probabilistic model using the state variables such as the time until the driver notices the crossing vehicle at intersection when the driver crosses the intersection. Two types of driving support systems were compared in this study. One is with only voice guidance, and the other is tree aroma by use of the olfactory stimulus in addition to the voice guidance.
