Abstract

This paper presents a road marking detection method using Light Detection and Ranging(LIDAR) intensity data by a simple template matching. Sometimes an optical camera does not produce clear enough images for road marking detection due to changing light conditions. On the other hand, the reflection intensity of LIDAR is hardly affected by sunlight or other optical conditions because LIDAR has its own light source. For this reason, the proposed method generates road surface texture images from LIDAR intensity data. The detection rate of "Speed limit 30km/h" and "Pedestrian crossing warning sign " on public roads was 92% and 87%, respectively.
