Abstract

Populations of developed nations, including Japan, are aging rapidly. It is hoped that a driving assistance method will play a role in allowing elderly people to maintain active lives and improving the traffic environment and education on traffic safety. In this study, we evaluate a driving assistance method that provides audio and visual information in a field operational test. The sound and images are presented when drivers do not decelerate or decelerate insufficiently at non-signalized intersections without right-of-way. The evaluation of the method indicates the possibility of improving driving behavior at the intersections where accidents involving elderly drivers frequently occur.
