Abstract

An example of a suicide prevention project for elementary schools is provided. On the basis of the fact that children discuss their problems very freely with puppets, I show how to enter children's world and speak their language. The program addresses death and dying (including suicide) for children who, indeed, have questions about death. A critical message of the program is that when a person has experienced a loss (through death, divorce, separation, or a pet's running away), there are many new feelings and emotions with which to deal. All of these are natural and normal. How the schools assist with these feelings is important. It is concluded that early prevention is essential.
