Abstract

This article presents a draft declaration concerning the elimination of violence against women for adoption in the 48th General Assembly. The text recognizes the urgent need for the universal application of the rights and principles with regards to equality, security, liberty, integrity and dignity of all human persons. It contains specific legislation and recommended laws addressing the issue of violence against women. In addition, this article discusses the prevalence of violence against women and the different initiatives and legislation undertaken to address the issue. It reviews the annals of the resolutions pertaining to the elimination of violence against women in the society. In the context of national legislation, reexaminations of laws in Brazil, Colombia, Puerto Rico, Spain, India, Australia, Sweden, Norway, Canada, France, Swiss, Malaysia, and Belgium related to the issue are presented.
