Abstract

This National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) Report investigates a crash involving a 33-year old driver of a truck-tractor with a 10,500 gallon cargo tank semitrailer traveling on a two-lane undivided highway near Stroud, Alabama. The driver, heading northbound, entered a right curve at an intersection and began to encroach on the southbound lane. The driver's efforts to correct resulted in the cargo tank semitrailer separating from truck-tractor, traveling into a ditch and striking a rock. The vehicle contained 9,000 net gallons of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) which then ignited, causing a deflagration. The driver was severely injured after being ejected from the truck-tractor. The report includes information on the highway, driver, and vehicle as well as loading, inspection and testing practices for the cargo tank. The NTSB concluded that the cause of the crash was likely the driver's overcorrection while traveling on a curve, with speed as a contributing factor.
