Abstract

This article reports the findings of a Manual for Assessing Safety Hardware (MASH) Test 3-11 evaluation of the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT)'s modified W-beam guardrail system with round wood posts. The National Cooperative Highway Research Program (NCHRP)-compliant system is crash-tested to evaluate its compliance with MASH criteria. MASH Test 3-11 involves a 2270P vehicle weighing 5000 lb +/-110 lb impacting the critical impact point (CIP) of a barrier at a target speed of 62 mph. The modified W-beam guardrail system is found to successfully meet the safety evaluation criteria for MASH 3-11.
