Abstract

High friction surface treatments (HFSTs) are thin treatments composed to polish and abrasion-resistant aggregates bonded to the pavement surface via polymer resin binder. They are increasingly being used by transportation agencies to reduce traffic crashes on horizontal curves, especially in wet conditions. The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) has reported issues related to premature failure of HFSTs; this article reports the authors' research findings on the best materials and practices to eliminate premature HFST failure and reduce costs, while maintaining treatment life and friction performance.
