Abstract

This study examines the severity of domestic violence in Korea and determines countermeasures in terms of education, legal actions, and social services. The seriousness of wife battering was examined in four categories: 1) initial manifestations; 2) frequency; 3) patterns; and 4) repercussions. According to previous research, women experienced battering for the first time within the first year of marriage. Battering occurred more than once a month; on the other hand, the Korean Women's Hot Line revealed that 42% of those interviewed had been assaulted more than once a week. All research in this study showed that with the lapse of time the patterns of wife battering become more varied and serious in degree. The first assault is usually characterized by being slapped in the face, then gradually progresses to strangling and the use of weapons or objects. Often battering leads to serious injuries, psychological trauma, as well as long-term mental strain. Realizing the seriousness of the problem, countermeasures were formulated and summarized in this paper.
