Abstract

The issue of husband battering is among the most controversial topics in the sociological study of family violence. In the years since the first article about battered husbands was published, claims and counterclaims have made for a lively debate. So far, however, battered husbands have not been successfully constructed as a social problem. This article compares the issue of battered husbands and that of battered wives, and shows why the former has not become a social problem. Three major factors account for different outcomes of the two issues: social movement influences, the type and extent of professional and mass media attention to the issues, and gender images of women and men.
