Abstract

Religion remains a problematic issue in the political and democratic trajectory in the African continent. The challenges associated with the role and status of religion in the secular state model in most African countries is not debatable. Ethno-political and religious conflicts have developed into prolonged crises in many countries on the continent with the consequence of a backlash of the slow pace of socio-economic development, resulting in untold hardship and astronomical penury. This paper adopts the qualitative method of data collection; hence the information contained in this research are gathered mainly from secondary sources. The article reveals that religion is the fulcrum upon which the conflict in the Central African Republic is escalating. The paper identifies the anarchical situation in the Central African Republic as a lesson for Nigeria. In comparing the Central African Republic case to that of Nigeria, the article recommends that Nigeria needs to be cautious in handling religious issues to prevent it from sliding into disintegration.
