Abstract

In this study, the effect of the failure criteria on the advanced high-strength steel and carbon steel B-pillar in case of a side impact is investigated to evaluate the effects of failure criteria on the accuracy of impact simulation. Three different failure criteria, namely Johnson-Cook, Bao-Xue-Wierzbicki and Biquad, are compared concerning B-pillar material energy absorption for different impact velocities. The effects of failure criteria on the side impact simulations are examined for these failure criteria and impact velocities. Energy absorption values increased as the impact velocity increased for all failure criteria. The results of simulations were compared with those without the failure criteria to evaluate the effects of failure criteria on side impact simulations. It is shown and validated that failure criteria must be taken into consideration for the accuracy of impact simulations of automotive components designed with different types of steels.
