Abstract

The purpose of the study is to use infrared thermography to highway bridges inspection for fatigue deterioration and damage. Laboratory tests of cantilever specimens with stiffeners under cyclic loading under conditions corresponding to the actual operating conditions of the bridge superstructure were carried out. It is shown that the process of metal self-heating makes it possible to predict the appearance of fatigue fractures long before their appearance on the surface. An algorithm for processing thermograms under random loading was developed on the basis of the least squares methods and self-reference lock-in thermography. Studies on bridges in operation have shown the effectiveness of the proposed method.
