Abstract

A cost-efficient folding pattern is disclosed for the folding of a side air bag for a low risk air bag deployment, while maintaining acceptable Injury Assessment Reference Value (IARV) numbers, at or below 80 percent of the federal standard (FMVSS 208). During the folding process, the inboard portion of the air bag is pulled over to the far side of the outboard edge such that both panels on the outboard side are aligned with each other. This folding pattern is one bag fold for a three fourths mount module environment, which results in a reduction of the IARV from 189 percent to 80.2 percent. This folding pattern can also be utilized on modules with a single or dual stage inflator.
