Abstract

Although automated people movers (APMs) have been around for four decades, there are still only 125 of them in service worldwide. On the high end of the APM scale is personal rapid transit (RT). Over the last decade, a committee composed of engineers has been writing standards for APMs under the guidance of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE). Members have labored to write standards to define and facilitate the growth of automated horizontal passenger transport. The standards apply to all of the propulsion systems used by APMs.
