Abstract

David Thomas, HM Principal Specialist Inspector of Health and Safety, Construction division technology unit and a member of IStructE's Health and Safety, has highlighted the latest statistics and accidents. In 2005/06, 64 people were killed, which was a major reduction in comparison to previous year. There were 24 fatal injuries to workers in the construction industry due to falling from height in 2005/06. Besides falling, another common kinds of fatal injury includes being struck by a moving/falling object, and being trapped by collapsing/overturning objects. Different member states of the European Union have different methods for collating information relating to fatal injuries at work. Deaths from construction-related ill- health, such as from asbestos exposure, are excluded and may be considerably more numerous than those from the safety-related incidents.
