Abstract

Fire smoke movement in large atriums and in the surrounding structures was analyzed numerically. The objective is to analyze the effect of the lower smoke and the buoyant plume on the upper structures, the smoke accumulation at the ceiling and the smoke sedimentation in the atrium. The analysis results show that a smoke control system is extremely important to ensure atrium fire safety. The smoke control system can enable the atrium to be used as a smoke reservor to exhaust smoke from structures around the atrium. The fire protection design of these structures can then include normal openings to the atrium and exclude mechanical exhaust system. These results can be used to design and evaluate the fire protection design of atrium structures.
