Abstract

Some suggestions regarding good life safety designs for some special locations in health care facilities are discussed. The stair pressurization method, which is used in health care facilities are required to be equipped with automatic fire sprinkler systems by the Life Safety Codes. Ventilating equipment and systems serving the exit must be independent of other building ventilation systems. Equipment and duct work may also be located within the smoke-proof enclosure, with he air intake located either within a two-our enclosure or installed to receive air directly from outside. Pressurization fan air intakes should have a smoke detector installed and wired to the fan start circuit to ensure that smoke from an outside source is not coming into the stairway. A glass fire barrier wall forming a smoke partition can be used with proper glass types to separate the atrium spaces from the rest of the spaces to avoid smoke from spreading.
