Abstract

A growing set of barrier and pole tests have to be taken into account to design a side impact restraint system that meets worldwide safety requirements. This paper presents an efficient design process to meet side impact requirements using innovative sled testing and efficient MADYMO simulations. The development methodology is based on a flexible approach that combines the requirements from legal and consumer tests as well as customer-specific requirements to meet the technical side impact system targets in a cost effective manner. The main advantages of the presented side impact development methodology are: Robust restraint design for a wide range of crash modes Design decisions can be taken earlier and with greater confidence level in system performance results Significant reduction in number of full-scale crash tests This presented design and development process ensures a better controlled development of side impact systems and contributes to a significant cost reduction at our customers.
