Abstract |
This article explored family crisis counselling associated with domestic violence (DV); conceptualized family crisis as a situation that distresses the normal functioning of the family and requires a new set of responses to the cause of the perceived or actual crisis in order for the family to return to pre-crisis or equilibrium. The author identified sources of major family crisis including abuse and violent behavior. She observed that family crisis may be interpersonal or structural and indicates that counselling victims of DV is a specialized field that requires professional training. In addition, postulates that when crisis is of DV nature and problems seem inextricably tied to problems with other family members, the counsellor should address each of the contributing issues and ease the effects of the pattern of the problems. Proffers required steps counsellors should employ in working families with DV crisis. Drawing from the (AAMFT) code of ethics extends ethical guidelines resource for family counsellors working with families in crisis situation seeking to navigate ethical dilemmas with the client's best interest in mind.
