Abstract

This article describes the work of Q-Free TDC (United Kingdom) in designing strategies to help protect vulnerable road users such as pedestrians and bicyclists. The author notes that Scotland is supporting efforts to increase the number of cyclists and build more sustainability and fitness into personal mobility. However, vulnerable road users offer challenges to standard safety approaches. The article discusses technological innovations, including piezoelectric-based solutions; signal prioritization currently being tested at three sites in Glasgow, Scotland; bicycle and pedestrian detection; data processing and data analysis to show whether or not safety approaches are successful. A final section discusses the role of data fusion.
