Abstract

The novel COVID-19 pandemic provides a space for new abusive tactics to be utilized by perpetrators of domestic violence (DV). The dynamics of DV situations have been researched and have been of clinical interest for many years. However, the pandemic has created a lose-lose situation for many victims. DV victims are placed in an unimaginable position of either remaining in an abusive home to prevent further spreading of the virus, or risking contracting the virus while moving into a new living environment. This article will reflect upon new abusive tactics currently seen in DV cases during COVID-19, systemic barriers to access of care for victims of DV during this time, and recommendations on how to address and meet the needs of victims during and post-COVID-19.
