Abstract

Self-immolation is a fatal and shocking method for suicide with a distinct geographical pattern[1].

Although cultural and social motives could play an important role in application of this method[2] we still need to know the exact underlying drives for such act [3].The existing evidence suggests that self-immolation is prevalent in some Asian countries such as Iran and Afghanistan [4,5].

It is interesting to realize that great and famous Persian poet Hafez who probably died in 1390 has had so much influence on the lives of ordinary Iranian and Afghani people as his collected works i.e. "Divan" nowadays are to be found in their homes.

His poems are memorized by them and used as proverbs. His poems have also influenced not only post-fourteenth century Persian writers but also Western writers such as Thoreau, Goethe, and Ralph Waldo Emerson....
