Abstract

The Finite Element predictions of the physical response of foams during impact by a rigid body can be determined by material law equations. However, the structural aspect of foam, its discontinuous nature, makes it difficult to apply such laws. To date, experimental studies suggest that the state of hydrostatic stress may affect the response of a Hybrid III head from interacting with foam padding. Basing from this general observation and the elastoplasticity theory, an idealized computational model of foam is generated and used to quantify the effects of the state of stress.
