Abstract

OBJECTIVE To analyze the relevant characteristics of patients with craniocerebral trauma in a tertiary hospital in Shantou from 2009 to 2018, to clarify the cause of injury and its medical economic burden, and to provide references for formulating craniocerebral trauma prevention measures and strategies.

METHODS The 10th edition of the International Classification of Diseases was adopted. The first cases who were admitted to the hospital from January 1, 2009 to December 31, 2018 and had craniocerebral trauma as the main diagnosis on the first page of the medical record were selected as the research objects, and the population and time of injury were described. Characteristics, and perform Joinpoint regression analysis on the number of inpatients and their medical expenses.

RESULTS During the ten years of the study, 49.46% of patients with craniocerebral trauma were hospitalized in road traffic accidents, which was the first cause of injury in the entire population. Craniocerebral trauma caused by falls caused 32.20% of children (≤14 years old) and 41.79% of the elderly (>60 years old) to be admitted to the hospital, followed by traffic injuries (children: 30.59%; elderly: 40.08%). Regression analysis shows that the average annual increase in the number of traffic injuries, fall injuries and fall injuries were 4.54%, 7.89%, and 10.75%, respectively, and the median hospitalization expenses also showed different increases. Less than 20% of hospitalized patients with craniocerebral trauma can enjoy the medical cost sharing of basic medical insurance, and more than 95% of traffic injuries are paid by the patients.

CONCLUSION Road traffic accidents are still the first cause of trauma to the entire population in the hospital's radiation area, and the main cause of trauma to children and the elderly is from falls. While taking effective measures to curb the growth of the main types of injuries, it is also necessary to improve the injury risk sharing and social assistance mechanisms as soon as possible to achieve a three-level prevention strategy combining prevention and treatment.
