Abstract

In a super-aging society where one in four people in the total population is 65 years old or older, the background to the fact that traffic accidents caused by elderly drivers has become a major social problem is the increase in the number of elderly drivers themselves and each driver. It is considered that there are two factors, that is, the increased risk of accidents. In this paper, after reorganizing the factors that increase the number of elderly driver accidents, we focus on the accident risk of each elderly driver, and various functional deteriorations due to aging, human error in car driving, and traffic accidents. We will examine the mechanisms leading up to the occurrence and their relevance. In addition, we will consider countermeasures for elderly drivers to continue driving safely, taking into account the progress of technological development and dissemination in today's automobile society.
